A delightful Saturday (on 08/09/2008)

We did our usual Saturday stuff and then a great bike ride with the reward of dinner at Kitchen Table Bistro.
We did the usual Farmers Market trip on Saturday morning. We didn't have any real plans and we ended up dumbing around on Church Street and having brunch/lunch at Penny Cluse Café. We've only eaten there twice. It's been good both times, but there's always a long wait. They do let you put your name on the list and then check back later. I seem to have ordered the same thing both times... the excellent banana bread with maple-walnut cream cheese spread (thick, warm, moist slices), and the green huevos rancheros. Tasty and maybe on the edge of acceptable Mexican food... although it's really just eggs and salsa, isn't it?
On the way home, we talked about going to Kitchen Table Bistro for a non-event. I suggested that we go that evening. Then we decided we needed to go on a bike ride because we had plans for the rest of the weekend. I looked in the backroads book and found another ride for us to do: a loop of New Haven and Vergennes. The book rated it as "easy" and said it was good for children. The ride started with about 2 miles of gently rolling downhill and then some rolling farm land with nice views of both the Greens and the Adirondacks. But there were hills. More hills than I would classify as an "easy" bike ride. A couple were severely cruel in length. One was a stealth hill, appearing after a sharp turn. Granted, we'd pretty much ignored our bikes since the last bigger ride, but this one kicked out butts. The cherry on top was that the last two miles were back up all that gently rolling downhill from the start. Something close to 31 miles in total, I think. [As of yesterday, my total miles on the new bike was 460. I am trying to get over 500 before the trip next month... for no good reason.]

A very cute riding companion:

Lots of water! (We've had a lot of rain this summer. And by a lot, I mean A LOT. Record rainfall for July.):

And... PIGS! They all ran over to see us when we stopped. I tried to pet one, and they all shied away, but not very far. Maybe I looked hungry or they could smell pork on my breath. I love pigs... live or plated.

We couldn't decide if that one in the back was just brown or was muddy... or maybe both.
The evening dinner at Kitchen Table Bistro merits its own blog entry.
