A return trip to Virginia 08/18 to 08/22

My job had me come back down to Virginia for a week in the office.
I hadn't been back to the office since August of 2007. A lot has changed and they wanted me to come down to reconnect. They also had scheduled a team lunch and wanted me to be there for that. So the trip was on the books for a while, and we've had a slow month. My boss and I anticipated a low-key week of mostly talking with team folks and doing some low-level training. Then the Friday before, we got a HUGE job with a fast deadline and I arrived on Monday to a full on press. I ended up working pretty hard and putting in much longer hours than planned. I had to cancel or forgo most of my visiting with friends and all. That part sucked. I didn't get to seeJ&S's new baby (go to the link and look at him in his little suit at a wedding... so cute!). I didn't get to go to my old yoga class and surprise them. I didn't get to see D&T.
I did stay with my friend BB and that meant we did get to spend some good quality time together. We spent Monday night drinking watermelon martinis (tasty and tongue loosening) and telling all there was to tell. Evidently there was a lot. Tuesday evening we went out to dinner and finished up all the old business still hanging around from the night before.
Wednesday I worked fairly late and realized that if I was going to make it out to The Ledge, I needed to go then, as Thursday was going to be a big work push. So I did drive out to The Ledge. It is very much as we left it. The plants are bigger. The front yard is weedy. The house is empty and relatively clean. The neighbors (B&T) came over to talk. They're looking good and doing well. The woman who lived across the street died before we moved and then when we left, the little cluster of three houses is just B&T now. (Note to the universe: Can we PLEASE sell the house?) The trip out was fairly depressing and ate up a lot of time. It takes an hour to get there and by the time I talked with B&T it was dark dark. I made the rounds and checked things out. Then I headed back in to Alexandria. I stopped at Wendy's and ate a quick bite, notable only because while I was eating a guy came in and ordered the thing with two patties, lots of bacon, and cheese... and he got extra cheese on it! I was amused. Then I hit traffic coming back because they had the inbound freeway shut down to one lane. I was no longer amused.
Thursday was pretty much a mad rush of work. I stayed fairly late and then went back to BB's house. Her hubby was back from being gone all week and we got to visit, share a meal, and the three of us talk for a while.
Friday was a whirlwind. I scrambled to get some things in good working order before I left. I went to the airport early, and there was a wreck outside the rental car return place, and it took forever to get into the airport. IAD is the complete antithesis of BTV airport. But I managed to get in and through security and have a bit of food before my flight. I got back to Burlington at 7 PM and we were off and running as soon as I got home. But it was really good to be home.
